Vice Ganda hosts PH franchise of ‘Last One Laughing’

With the Philippines as the latest addition to the franchise, top-tier comedian Vice Ganda hosts “Last One Laughing Philippines.”

The reality-comedy show already premiered on Prime Video Philippines with Vice as the housekeeper and facilitator of the comedy house. Mechanics are simple: all comedians have to show off their comedic style and skills, but the catch is no one is allowed to laugh.

“Ako ‘yung supervisor. Ako ‘yung nagbibigay ng mga challenges. Ako ‘yung nagpapataw ng ‘pag may nasusuway sila sa bilin nung may-ari ng bahay,” Vice said.

The 10 comedians are Tuesday Vargas, Kim Molina, Victor Anastacio, Pepe Herrera, Jayson Gainza, Negi, Chad Kinis, Empoy Marquez, Jerald Napoles and Rufa Mae Quinto.

“Sobrang diverse nung line-up, iba’t ibang personalities, iba’t ibang materials, iba-iba ‘yung strengths nila. I was surprised, overwhelmed, gagged sa mga ginawa nila,” Vice said.

But Vice admits comedy is one of the hardest crafts in the industry.

“Ever since naman ang hirap na talaga magpatawa. Hindi lang naman ngayon, extra-hirap lang ngayon. Mahirap magpatawa kasi, it requires a lot of skills, talent. Madaling maging nakakatawa. May mga tao nakakatawa pero hindi sila komedyante. Mahirap maging komedyante ‘yung profession, ‘yung art ng pagpapatawa.”

She added: “Kaya ‘pag naging komedyante ka, mahirap ‘yun kasi it’s a craft. Dapat inaalagan, dine-develop, hino-hone, pinaprotektahan, at nire-reinvent.”

Vice emphasized the importance of continuously reinventing your material and your style of comedy.  “May mga komedyante kasing naging successful sila for a certain era or phase, or for a certain character, pero after noon, nawala na. Kaya dapat hino-hone siya nang dire-direcho. Inaaral, nireredevelop at nire-reinvent.”

Vice admitted that it was easy for her to reinvent her material because she infuses current events. But still, why does she find it harder now to do comedy? Vice had this observation.

“Mga tao ngayon galit. One of the reason for me is because of the pandemic. Feeling ko lang. Maraming nagbago sa takbo ng isip ng mga tao. ‘Yung sensibilities at sensitivities ng mga tao. Ang daming nangyari sa mundo at sa Pilipinas na ginawang magagalitin ang mga tao na hindi siguro nila nare-realize na, magagalitin ‘yung mga tao. ‘Yung mga tao ngayon madaling mapikon, madaling magalit, madaling mainis, at dahil ganun sila, over ‘yung pagka-sensitive nila. Dala ng madali kang ma-agit.”
