One of the stars of the Team USA gymnastics team has revealed why she took a nasty fall during her floor routine.

Jade Carey – the reigning gold medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – sadly will not be able to defend her achievement at the 2024 Games in Paris due to an unfortunate tumble she took during her performance on the floor.

At the Tokyo Games three years ago, Carey was awarded 14.366 after a tremendous display of athleticism during her floor routine.

However, this time round, the 24-year-old was awarded a low score of 10.633 after losing her footing while trying to complete her final flip.

While both her feet hit the mat, her weight and momentum were just too much behind her, causing her to tumble backward.

The fall – along with some other issues in her execution – caused the judges to give the star the second-lowest score of the line-up, with South Korea’s Lee Yunseo coming in last place with a score of 10.066.

In the wake of her poor performance, Carey opened up about her loss with Olympics.com.

“I just have not been feeling well the past few days and haven’t been able to eat or anything,” Carey told the outlet, following Sunday’s opening day of the women’s competition.

The 24-year-old wanted to assure her fans that it wasn’t simply her nerves affecting her.

“I had, like, no energy today and didn’t really have a sense of what was going on in my head. So, I just kind of wanted people to know that so, they know that there’s actually something wrong,” she added.

Three-time Olympic champion Aly Raisman also spoke to the outlet, giving some insight on what it’s like for an athlete to be under the weather when they have to compete.

“One of the hardest things about sports is that no matter how much you prepare you, sometimes the morning that you wake up for a meet, you might not be feeling well. You might be jet lagged, you may not have slept well, and fluke things can happen. It’s just so devastating to hear that she hasn’t been feeling well,” she said.

She continued: “I hope that she knows that she did an unbelievable job. She should be so proud of herself. Gymnastics is already hard enough when you’re feeling your peak, at your best. So the fact that she said she hasn’t eaten in a few days and has been sick and was able to perform at that level, is truly remarkable.”

Despite the lapse in performance on the floor, Carey managed to come second in the vaulting standings having successfully executed a Cheng vault and a double-twisting Yurchenko, earning herself a whopping 14.433 average.
