Despite his ongoing battle with cancer, Doctor Wilie Ong formalized his 2025 Senate bid on Thursday after his wife Liza Ong filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) before the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Liza turned emotional as she thanked everyone who wished for Ong’s recovery.
Ong revealed his cancer diagnosis in September after his doctors found a huge mass in his abdomen.
The doctor-vlogger, who ran for the vice presidency in 2022, is in Singapore now for medical treatment.
Ong’s lawyer Gilberto Lauengco said the Senate aspirant would be back from Singapore in late November and may kick off his “limited physical campaign” the following month.
“As far as his health condition is concerned, he will be able to go back to the Philippines by end of November and he will be available to physically campaign by December,” Lauengco told reporters.
The lawyer assured that Ong, who is running under the Aksyon Demokratiko party, was well aware of his limitations, adding that his condition is “treatable.”
He added that Ong is “physically fit to perform the duties of a senator.”
“He’s doing fine… He’s fully confident [but also] well aware of his limitations… He knows and understands that his sickness is not something that will debilitate him enough to prevent him from doing that,” Lauengco said.
