MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday congratulated Filipina boxer Aira Villegas for winning a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics.

Villegas settled for third place after losing against Turkiye’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the women’s boxing 50-kg semi-final stage.

“That was a knockout performance in your Olympic debut!” the President said in a social media post.

“You made us all proud and are surely an inspiration to young Filipinas,” he said.

“Thank you for bringing home bronze,” he added

Villegas’ win brings the Philippines’ medal tally to 3, following gymnast Carlos Yulo’s back-to-back gold finishes in the men’s floor exercise and vault competition.
