LeBron James at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Led by flagbearers LeBron James and Coco Gauff, Team USA made its way down the River Seine in a boat filled with around 350 Olympians during the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, more than half of the US delegation of 594 athletes. Basketball stars like Stephen Curry mingled with athletics stars Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson.

Even fencing power couple Lee Kiefer and Gerek Meinhardt got in on the fun, posing in front of the Eiffel Tower for photos.

“A lot of respect to France and Paris for giving us this opportunity to showcase our talents,” James said in an interview with NBC. “We’re here for USA. We’re ready to get out and all compete at a high level.”

Coco Gauff Beams with Pride During Olympics Opening Ceremony

Despite the rain, Team USA found plenty of reasons to cheer. Occupying two floors of their boat, Tara Davis Woodhall excitedly waved her Stars and Stripes at the fans on the banks of the river. Beach volleyball players Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng cheered as the boat neared the Eiffel Tower, which is also the site of the court they will play on.

USA was the second to last boat in the Parade of Nations, as the United States will host the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. The athletes then were treated to an incredible performance by Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion.

Since all of Team USA couldn’t be in Paris for the Opening Ceremony, other teams figured out a way to still celebrate. The US women’s soccer team still dressed in their Opening Ceremony gear and took pictures in Marseilles. Surfers in Tahiti took part in the smaller version of the ceremony led by John John Florence, who carried the US flag.
