Daniel also opens up on plans to eventually settle down with girlfriend Kathryn
“I am a ship and she is my anchor” is how Daniel Padilla described his nine-year relationship with girlfriend Kathryn Bernado in an interview with Boy Abunda.
The reel-to-real couple, who’s also celebrating their 10th anniversary as a love team this year, have constantly been sharing snippets of their life through social media posts and vlogs. But Daniel said that one of their secrets to having a happy relationship is giving your partner some “me time.”
“I am no expert. I just think she’s the love of my life. I think that’s it. Just give each other time. Like me, kakagaling ko lang ng Boracay. Binigyan niya ako ng time with my friends at saka kapatid ko. Ganun lang, bigyan natin ng oras din ‘yung mga sarili natin… huwag natin sakalin ang isa’t-isa,” he said.
(I just came from Boracay. She gave me time and space to spend with my friends and my siblings. I think that’s it, just give ourselves some time… Let’s not suffocate each other.)

But Daniel explained that despite wanting time apart and being together for almost a decade, he still feels eager to spend time with his girlfriend. “Sa work, kami ang magkasama. After work, kami pa rin ang magkasama. ‘Yung beautiful dito is, I am always excited to see Kathryn.”
(At work, we’re together. We’re still together even after work. But what’s beautiful here is I am always excited to see Kathryn.)
He added, “I am a ship and she is my anchor. Kaya ako steady, kasi nandyan ‘yung Kathryn para sa akin. Ganun ‘yung relationship namin. Kailangan ko ‘yung tao na ‘yun. Mahal ko siya at kailangan ko siya.” (The reason why I’m steady is because I have Kathryn with me. That’s how our relationship works. I need that woman. I love her and I need her.)
However, the actor admitted that their relationship has faced several challenges, too. While he did not delve into details, Daniel admitted that he made a mistake in the past.
“Si Kathryn, pinatawad ako. Nagkamali ako before (Kathryn has forgiven me. I did something wrong before). I was a kid. I was stupid, ‘diba? And still, tinanggap niya ako at tinanggap niya ako ng buo. (But she still accepted me wholeheartedly.)”
Now that they’re more mature, Daniel shared that he and Kathryn are also preparing for the next step. “Tinuturuan namin ang isa’t-isa… Ilang taon na rin naman na kami ‘di ba? Sa future, pagdating ng panahon, syempre magsasama na talaga kami. Hinahanda na rin namin ‘yung mga sarili namin,” he said.
(We’re guiding each other… We’ve been together for years. A time will come in the future that we’ll settle down. We’re preparing ourselves for that.)
The 26-year-old actor added that they still have more things to learn before he and Kathryn get married.
“Ako kasi with her family, and si Mama kay Kathryn, pareho kaming inaalagaan, ninu-nurture kung anong dapat. Talagang tinuturuan na kami ng mga magulang kung paano maging handa. Very healthy ‘yun for me… Before kami magsama, kailangan muna namin magpakasal. ‘Yun ang usapan,” he shared.
(Both – her family to me and my mom to Kathryn – really guide us and nurture us. They teach us how to prepare for this. It’s very healthy for me… We decided that we’ll get married first before living together.)
Kathryn and Daniel were first paired together in the 2011 ABS-CBN series Growing Up. They first confirmed their relationship in 2018. Their last project together, The House Arrest of Us, aired in October 2020. – Rappler.com
