Rebekah Vardy has taken a swipe at Wayne Rooney as she dismissed his claim the England manager asked her husband Jamie Vardy to tell her to ‘calm down’ during the Euro 2016 tournament.

The WAG, 42, took part in a Q&A with her fans on Instagram where she was asked what the funniest fake story she had seen about herself was.

Although Rebekah said there had been ‘so many’, she made sure to mention being ‘told off by the England manager’ as one of them.

This referred to Wayne Rooney claiming Rebekah’s husband Jamie was asked by then England manager Roy Hodgson to tell his wife to ‘calm down’ her behaviour during the Euros during the infamous Wagatha Christie trial.

Wayne explained in court: ‘I was asked to speak to my teammate Jamie Vardy about the fact that Becky’s media activities were causing problems and distractions which the FA wanted to avoid.’

Rebekah’s representatives later told the press outside the court hearing this claim was ‘total nonsense’.

During the Euros, Rebekah was famously accused of ditching her allocated seats so she could sit behind Wayne’s wife Coleen for the clash between England and Wales.

The court had previously heard Rebekah sat behind Coleen to ‘maximise media attention’ and it led to ‘a commotion’ with members of Rebekah’s party and ended up causing security concerns.

Rebekah was also particularly active on social media during the competition, sharing 42 Instagram posts during the month-long tournament.

At the time, she was regularly posting on Instagram and Twitter to update fans on the behind-the-scenes life of a WAG supporting her husband at the competition.

She posted daily selfie snaps as she posed in England caps and football shirts ahead of matches.

In the same answer, Rebekah also insisted she never wanted to become the next Victoria Beckham, one of the most famous WAGs ever thanks to her marriage to David Beckham.

She also dismissed a claim she had wanted to ‘upgrade’ from her ex Luke Foster -who was jailed for running a cannabis factory.

Elsewhere during the Q&A, Rebekah hinted she and Jamie may move abroad one day when his football career comes to an end.

Asked what was her favourite country she has visited, Rebekah replied: ‘Thailand! It’s incredible and the people are so friendly. Maybe we will live there one day.’

The media personality, who has appeared on Dancing On Ice and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! also hinted more TV work could be coming up in the future.

A fan told her: ‘Mr and Mrs Vardy should be a new show, would you do it if asked to do a show like that?’ to which Reebekah replied: ‘Imagine’ along with a wink emoji.

Rebekah lost her £3million libel claim against Coleen Rooney, in a bombshell case that gripped the nation in July 2022.

In October 2022, the judge ruled that Rebekah should pay 90 per cent of Coleen’s costs, with an initial £800,000 then ordered to be paid.

Rebekah was left with a mammoth legal bill and her reputation in tatters when a High Court judge dismissed her evidence in the original trial as ‘evasive or implausible’ and accused her of deliberately deleting WhatsApp messages central to the case.

She had sued over an accusation she had leaked details of Coleen’s private life to the press. It came after Coleen had staged an elaborate sting operation to find out who was passing on stories about her private life to The Sun.

The court case was so intense Rebekah’s leading barrister ended up working on Christmas Day.

The trial resulted in a Disney+ documentary and was turned into a Channel 4 drama starring Michael Sheen as Coleen’s barrister, David Sherborne.

Robin Dunne, for Coleen, said that Rebekah’s team had accrued ‘unreasonable and disproportionate’ costs before the trial.

Some of the costs related to bids made at a hearing in February 2022 for further documents and information from both sides, as well as Coleen’s bid to have legal action against Rebekah’s former agent heard alongside the libel claim.

Coleen’s lawyers previously claimed that Rebekah’s leaked information to The Sun either directly or through her agent Caroline Watt ‘acting on her instruction or with her knowing approval’.

Her bid was denied, with Ms Watt’s legal bill of £65,000 previously paid by Coleen.

Mr Dunne said they were ‘significant applications’, adding that ‘we fully accept there needed to be work done’, but that Rebekah’s bill for around eight weeks worth of work was ‘disproportionate’.

Rebekah’s lawyers are opposing the bid to reduce the costs bill.

Jamie Carpenter KC, for Rebekah, said there was ‘barely a day’ when her lawyers were not working at that time.

The specialist costs court in London heard that Rebekah’s trial barrister, Hugh Tomlinson KC, had ‘worked on the case on Christmas Day while he was on holiday’.

Mr Carpenter said that many of the lawyers worked Boxing Day and the bank holidays around Christmas on Rebekah’s case.

He continued: ‘No one was costs building.

‘This was work that absolutely had to be done and it was a huge amount of work.’

The hearing before Senior Costs Judge Andrew Gordon-Saker is due to conclude on Wednesday.

In the viral social media post in October 2019 at the heart of the libel claim, Mrs Rooney said she had carried out a months-long ‘sting operation’ and accused Rebekah’s of leaking information about her private life to the press.

Coleen publicly claimed Rebekah’s account was the source behind three stories in The Sun newspaper featuring fake details she had posted on her private Instagram profile – featuring her travelling to Mexico for a ‘gender selection’ procedure, her planning to return to TV, and the basement flooding at her home.

Following the high-profile trial, Mrs Justice Steyn ruled in Coleen’s favour, finding it was ‘likely’ that Ms Watt had passed information to The Sun and that she ‘knew of and condoned this behaviour’.

The judge added that Rebekah’s had ‘actively’ engaged, ‘directing Ms Watt to the private Instagram account, sending her screenshots of Coleen’s posts, drawing attention to items of potential interest to the press, and answering additional queries raised by the press via Ms Watt’.

Wayne Rooney ‘WARNED teammate Jamie Vardy about wife Rebekah’s behaviour during Euro 2016’

Rooney  took to the stand where he said he had private talks with Vardy, and told him to ensure Rebekah didn’t distract the team’s campaign with her social media posts.

He said: ‘I remember getting pulled to one side by a member of the FA staff.

‘I was asked to speak to my teammate Jamie Vardy about the fact that Becky’s media activities were causing problems and distractions which the FA wanted to avoid.

‘I think Becky had some kind of column in The Sun about Euro 2016. I obviously had bigger things to focus upon at the time but I agreed to speak to Jamie because it was easier than pushing back against the FA.

‘I relayed to Jamie what I had been told by the FA and Jamie said he would speak to Becky about it.

‘I was then asked during a press conference about the fact that I had spoken to Jamie about Becky’s media activities.

‘I did not see the article but apparently there had been a story in The Sun about my conversation with Jamie about Becky.

‘The issue didn’t go any further than that.’

Vardy watched intently as Rooney was asked about their ‘awkward’ chat during Euro 2016.

Rooney recalled sitting down with his teammate over a can of Red Bull and a coffee in the England squad’s games room during the competition in France.

He said: ‘I remember the conversation I had with Jamie. It was awkward for me to speak to a teammate about his wife.

‘It wasn’t my place to speak to Mrs Vardy. I was asked to speak to Mr Vardy and I followed those instructions.’

Rooney said he did not know whether Vardy had raised the issue with his wife, saying: ‘If Jamie gives that information to his wife or not is not down to me.’

He was asked whether he was certain the conversation took place and replied: ‘I’m sat here under oath. I 100 per cent spoke to Mr Vardy on the situation. Again, if he wants to relay that back to his wife that’s entirely his business.’

Around two hours later, Vardy issued the statement through his wife’s PR agent. He said: ‘Wayne is talking nonsense. He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016.

‘There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.’

Rumours of a rift between Wayne and Jamie were later denied by then England manager Roy Hodgson.

Asked about a feud at the time, he said: ‘I haven’t got a clue what you are referring to. There are absolutely no problems in football terms between Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.

‘In fact quite the reverse, they are very close friends, both on the field and off the field. I have got no idea what you are referring to

‘I certainly would advise Wayne to give no comment to it because it is obviously one salacious story that someone has managed to spin. It is of no interest to us.’
