Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo revealed that his friend and fellow Olympian, Filipino-British gymnast Jake Jarman, had a hand in helping him win the gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics vault event.

Yulo, in an interview with Pia Arcangel on 24 Oras during his visit to GMA Network on Tuesday, shared that he joined Jarman at the latter’s gym for a training camp on the road to Paris. There, he was able to pick up some new things, particularly in the vault.

Jarman, whose mother has roots in Cebu, was the world champion in the men’s vault after winning the event in the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Antwerp, Belgium.

“‘Yung second vault, nahirapan talaga ako, hindi consistent talaga.  So nagpaturo po ako kay Jake, nung nag-training camp po ako. And yeah, nakatulong ‘yung technique niya po talaga,” Yulo said.

[My second vault, I had a tough time with it, it wasn’t consistent. So I asked Jake to teach me, when I was in the training camp. And yeah, his technique really helped.]

The two, according to Yulo, go way back having met each other around six years ago.

“Na-meet ko po siya parang 2018, mag-e-18 years old ako. And naka-compete ko siya. And especially, nag-training camp ako sa gym nila.”

[I met him around 2018, I was just around 18 years old. And I competed against him. And especially, I was able to have training camp at their gym.]

In Paris, Jarman, representing Great Britain, and Yulo both found success in the floor exercise, where Yulo won his first gold medal. Jarman secured the bronze in the same event.

In the vault, they both competed in the finals again.

Jarman scored 15.100 on his first vault and 14.766 on his second to finish at 14.933. That was good for fourth place, just shy of the podium. Yulo, meanwhile, scored 15.433 on his first vault and 14.800 on his second. His score of 15.116 won him his second gold medal in Paris.

When asked if he thanked Jarman after the awarding ceremony, Yulo joked: “Sabi ko, turuan niya pa po ako.”

[I said, please teach me more.]
