The number of deaths from floods and landslides caused by tropical storm Yagi in the Philippines has increased to 14 – the Philippine government said on September 3.
Edgar Posadas – spokesman for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council – confirmed that 12 people died on the island of Luzon and the Central Philippines. Two other people died in a province southwest of Manila. Meanwhile, four people are still missing in a province east of Manila.
The victims – including a pregnant woman and children – died from drowning, landslides, electrocution or other accidents caused by the effects of the tropical storm.
Since the weekend, torrential rains from Typhoon Yagi and the southwest monsoon have caused severe flooding in the Philippine capital Manila and other areas of the archipelago. Landslides have submerged houses and buried villages.
The Philippine weather agency said that Typhoon Yagi strengthened on September 3, moving west of Ilocos Norte province – Northern Philippines – with a speed of 25 km/h, winds of 85 km/h and gusts. up to 105 km/h.
Reports say that Typhoon Yagi will leave the Philippines on the morning of September 4. The storm is expected to strengthen throughout the forecast period and could reach severe tropical storm status in the next 12 hours, as well as hurricane status by September 5.
It is known that about 20 storms strike the Philippines every year.
