When I first encountered the project, my excitement was palpable. The script, which was sent to me, instantly captivated me. I’d long been a fan of Diablo Cody’s work, and this new endeavor seemed particularly compelling. The role of a character who couldn’t speak presented a fascinating challenge, one that was both technically and emotionally demanding. To prepare, I trained extensively with a mime in Los Angeles for several months, commuting back and forth from Vancouver. This preparation was crucial for embodying a character who was not only physically expressive but also deeply nuanced.

The character’s backstory—a pianist and a romantic who died young and was resurrected—added layers of complexity to the role. This depth required me to delve into both the physicality and the emotional resonance of the character, blending my training with an understanding of his tragic past.

On the other hand, playing Taffy was an entirely different but equally rewarding experience. Her character is charming and relatable, echoing some of my own traits. Taffy is genuinely kind-hearted but occasionally falters due to her upbringing, leading to moments of awkwardness that aren’t meant to offend. This authenticity is what makes her such a delightful character to portray.

Filming in New Orleans was another highlight. My initial visit to the city three years ago had left a lasting impression with its vibrant culture and unique atmosphere. The city’s robust music scene, rich art culture, and incredible food make it stand out from the more homogeneous parts of the U.S. New Orleans is a city that leaves an indelible mark on anyone who experiences it.

Working alongside a talented co-star, even if it was only for one intense scene, was a pleasure. Despite his youth, his professionalism and experience were evident. He contributed to a positive and supportive set environment, ensuring everyone felt at ease. His humility and kindness helped me overcome any nervousness about working with established names.

The dynamic between Taffy and Lisa in the film is portrayed with emotional depth. Despite coming from different backgrounds and having contrasting personalities, their relationship is presented with a realism that reflects the complexities of step-sibling bonds. Taffy’s empathy and Lisa’s emotional barriers create a rich narrative that resonates with anyone familiar with the challenges of navigating blended family relationships. The film captures this tension and connection in a way that feels both authentic and moving.
