Nadine Lustre Admits To Insecurities Over Her Skin Color When She Was Younger
Nadine appeared on our “Suggested” list on YouTube while guesting on Tabo Takes by One Page. She gave various statements on beauty, the environment, and mental health based on thoughts printed on paper and placed inside a dipper or tabo.
On the first piece of paper, it read, “Darker skin is not beautiful.”
Nadine immediately said, “I do not agree with this.” Like many Pinays, she shares how she didn’t like her skin color at first, and how it was seen as a disadvantage when she started in showbiz.
“I think when I was about 13, people would say that I was too dark. When I would go to auditions, they would only cast girls who are mestiza or have lighter skin. It became an insecurity of mine and I really want to like the whole thing where you do gluta. You use like whitening soap, you scrub calamansi on your body or lemon.”
She ends her sentiment with wisdom about loving yourself. “As I grew up, I learned to just love the skin that I’m in and to just appreciate the beauty that I have. When I travel to France, people really like my skin color. They would always say, ‘Damn, I wish I could get your tan.’ People just like what they don’t have.”
This is the part where you should do a slow clap.
Nadine Shares More Thoughts On Beauty And Ageism In Showbiz
Her quotable quotes on beauty don’t stop there. Another statement she got from the dipper was “Filipinos glorify unrealistic Western beauty standards.” A frustrated Nadine said, “I mean, that’s very true. It’s probably because were colonized for a very long time. We’ve been conditioned to like, things that are not ours because we think, you know, that’s like, better than what we have. We’re kayumanggi, we’re dark-skinned. Our facial features are not very prominent as well. And honestly, I find that beautiful.”
BRB, we need a moment because Nadine reminded us how beautiful we are. *PERIOD*
Nadine also had some strong words about age limits when she reacted to the sentence, “Women have an age limit in the entertainment industry.”
Nadine said, “Times have changed. I do understand that before, you know, the younger, the better. And it’s not just for women. I guess it goes for like the men as well.”
Nadine revealed the pressures of achieving something while you’re young, “I had a conversation with someone about this. It’s one of the people in the industry that I’ve worked with. He did say that, you know, when you’re younger, you have to already, like make a name for yourself, you have to do this and that, because as soon as you as soon as you’re over 30 If you haven’t made a mark in the industry, you’re never going to get in. And I honestly didn’t believe in that.”
Nadine said, “I do believe that you can be successful in the line of your career at any age. This is a timing that was made specifically for you. It could just be that you weren’t ready to be in this spot back then. But now you are. So everything that you have hoped for, everything that you wanted for your careers being given to you now because now you’re ready. Probably you weren’t ready back then, but now you are. So I don’t believe in age limits. I believe in the divine timing.”
Nadine is totally taking a page from Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh. And we’re here for it.
If you need a reminder to love and be kind to yourself, Nadine has delivered. You may now proceed to live your life following the words of the President of the Internet.
