NADINE Lustre claimed that the public still perceives mental health issues as something taboo in society. She recalled one of the most challenging moments of her life was her brother’s passing. Yet, she was told to “just keep working” to forget the tragedy eventually.
In an interview with One Down, she expressed how difficult the response was from her management back then when she asked for a break as she was grieving her brother’s death on October 8, 2017, with authorities declaring the cause as depression and suicide.
The multimedia artist said she had to endure everything and maintained professionalism throughout the situation, which greatly affected her mental health, but her request for a break from the industry wasn’t considered.
She was also unsure how she managed to hold it together and be able to get out of it as she said she “couldn’t really do anything” due to contractual matters. ”As much as you want to take a break and breathe from it, you can’t really do anything especially if you’re under contract,” she stated.
The “Deleter” star opened up that she “had to smile and interact with people like nothing happened” after being told that working will serve as her distraction from the tragedy. For Lustre, moments like this prove that there’s much needed progress to be made when it comes to the public’s knowledge about mental health.
