According to Kyodo news agency, the warning is expected to be lifted at 5:00 p.m. on August 15 (local time), unless there are new developments.
The Japanese government is expected to lift its warning of a high risk of a major earthquake along the Pacific coast on August 15 after confirming no new seismic activity around the Nankai Trench.
The warning is expected to be lifted at 5 p.m. local time on August 15, unless there are new developments, Kyodo news agency reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that as of August 14, it had not detected any seismic activity indicating worrying changes in the area. However, the government urged the public to remain vigilant and prepared, as the possibility of a major earthquake has not been ruled out.
Japan has long been concerned about the high risk of a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake occurring along the Nankai Trench within the next 30 years, with predictions that a large area could be shaken and coastal areas could be hit by tsunamis.
Japan issued a megathrust earthquake warning just hours after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck southwestern Japan on August 8, with the epicenter in waters off Miyazaki Prefecture, west of the Nankai Trench.
The Nankai Trench megathrust earthquake warning has prompted the central government and local communities to step up disaster preparedness measures over the past week, while also negatively affecting some tourism businesses during the peak season.
According to the Cabinet Office, the warning has been issued for 707 municipalities in 29 prefectures where strong tremors and high tsunamis are expected in the event of a major earthquake. The Japanese government estimates that, in the worst case, a megaquake in the Nankai Trench could cause more than 200 trillion yen ($1.36 trillion) in damage.
History shows that a megaquake around the Nankai Trench occurs about once every 100 to 150 years. About 80 years have passed since the last one.
On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and led to the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan.
