Jennie of BLACKPINK reflects on solo journey and hints at self-composed tracks in new album

Jennie of BLACKPINK discusses her solo comeback.
When asked when she joined BLACKPINK, Jennie said, “I’ve always been a member of BLACKPINK. We released our debut single in August 2016.”
She reflected on her time in New Zealand, sharing, “I moved to New Zealand when I was 9 and stayed until I was 14. I used to have a strong accent, but now it’s completely gone. It makes me sad because people don’t know I lived in New Zealand.” She also added, “I like Marmite. When Rosé and I were in New Zealand, we were always happy when people gave us Vegemite or Marmite.”
Regarding the release of her first solo song SOLO, she stated, “It’s been about 5–6 years, but let’s go with 5. It feels like such a long time ago. While preparing for Mantra, I looked back at videos and pictures from when I was working on SOLO, and I looked so young and cute.”
Jennie also talked about the difference between working as a solo artist versus as part of a group: “Working as a solo artist is very different. You’re alone in the studio, and with the group, we would discuss everything and move forward if everyone agreed. But now, I have to make all the decisions myself, which is the biggest difference.”
When asked about her personality, Jennie described herself as “very shy” and “the quietest” when with friends. She added, “But the person you see on stage is very different from that. I hope we can get to know each other better.”
Her current favorite BLACKPINK song is Lovesick Girls, which she explained, “It changes all the time, but right now it’s Lovesick Girls because it showcases BLACKPINK’s cute and girly side, and it has a unique vibe we rarely show on stage.” She also hinted that her future album will include self-composed tracks.
Jennie made her solo comeback on October 11th KST with the release of her single Mantra.
