Grace Rwaramba, 42, worked as Michael Jackson’s assistant for five years and as a nanny for 12 years for the singer’s three children before being fired two months ago. After Michael’s death, Grace Rwaramba shared with the press what she learned during her time with the pop legend’s family.

Crowned the “King of Pop” with albums that sold more than 750 million copies worldwide, Michael Jackson always had to live without a home, no money, no one to take care of him. That’s why Grace was heartbroken when, the day after the singer’s death, his mother, Katherine, called her just to ask where her son usually kept his cash .

“In fact, Michael Jackson didn’t have much money. If he had some, he would put it in a black bin bag and stuff it under the carpet. For decades, Michael had no home, living a nomadic life, from country to country, from hotel to hotel. When he had money, instead of buying a house to settle down, not having to rent a house, he got excited and said: ‘Let’s go to Florence’. When he got there, Michael bought an antique for 600,000 pounds and brought it back. I said: ‘This is worthless’. But he insisted: ‘Buy it, buy it’. Then, without even a house to live in, the antique was put in storage,” Grace said.

On Paris’s birthday, Michael’s daughter Grace had to spend her own money to buy balloons for the birthday party because Michael had no money left. “I also had to pay for someone to clean the children’s rooms. Their rooms were dirty because Michael didn’t pay for cleaning.”

Wasteful, can’t save money, lives on patronage

Explaining Michael Jackson’s constant state of poverty, Grace said that Michael was very foolish with money and did not know how to spend or manage his finances.

Grace said: “Once, Michael received a contract worth £1 million for his appearance in Japan. But while others shared the proceeds from his trip, the singer only pocketed £200,000.”
With his naive and trusting nature, Michael was often taken advantage of by others. Among them was The Nation of Islam – a religious organization that Michael joined in his later years. People from this organization informed Michael that the house he was renting in Los Angeles cost $100,000 a month, but when Grace asked real estate agents, she learned that it was only worth about $25,000 a month.

The nanny also believed that Michael himself was not aware that he had signed a contract to perform 50 shows in London. Because Michael’s health and physical condition had been very poor recently, when she learned that he would be performing 50 shows on his comeback tour, she exclaimed: “50 shows? What are you doing?” Hearing this, Michael replied: “I only signed for 10 shows.”

“He didn’t know what he was signing, he never did,” Grace commented.

The money to fund his lavish lifestyle and court cases in 2005, according to Grace, came from “the benefactor” Sheikh Abdullah, son of the king of Bahrain. Grace said: “One day, Abdullah called me and asked for my account number. I asked, he said he wanted to send money to Michael through my account. The first time it was $1 million, then $35,000. But his mother Katherine also needed money. So Michael told me to give her his ATM card. She withdrew money every day. I checked, so I knew.”

Not only that, Michael, his children and nanny were also invited to Bahrain, to live in a house as big as a castle. All expenses were paid by Prince Abdullah. In return, Michael had to participate in a charity performance and record a CD with Abdullah.

When Michael failed to keep his promise, the tables turned. Abdullah sued Jackson in a London court. The prince sought £4.7 million in damages and demanded that Michael return the money he had previously sent him. The singer was left bewildered. “Oh, I never spent his money?” He accused Grace of taking Abdullah’s money.

Frequent bowel lavage due to drug and medication overdose

Due to the effects of his repeated plastic surgeries, Michael Jackson often had to use painkillers. He was heavily addicted to a strong painkiller called OxyContin and had to inject Demerol daily. Grace also said that in order to have enough energy to practice for upcoming performances, the male singer had to use drugs.

“He ate very little, even less than the drugs and pills he took. I had to constantly clean Michael’s stomach. There were times when I wouldn’t let the kids see him because he looked so emaciated and confused,” Grace said.

Unable to bear Michael’s dire situation any longer, Grace contacted the singer’s relatives, asking them to intervene. “Me, his mother and Janet wanted to do something to stop it all. But when Michael found out, he was very angry with me.”

“Michael screamed, ‘You betrayed my trust. You called them behind my back.’ I said, ‘Michael, I didn’t betray you. I was just trying to help you.’ But Michael didn’t want to listen. That was one of the times he kicked me out of the house,” Grace said.

Grace was fired by Michael in December 2008. But in April 2009, out of pity for the three children, she returned to Michael’s house. The male singer kept kicking Grace out and calling her back whenever he needed her.

Be a terror to your children

The longtime nanny revealed that although Michael loved his children very much, there were times when he was not able to take care of the three children. He could not even take care of himself.

“One time, after I was fired, I got a phone call saying that Michael’s condition was getting worse. He wouldn’t shower, he wouldn’t shave, he wouldn’t eat. I was the one who forced him to do all this before and they wanted me to come back and help him,” Grace said.

When asked about Michael’s children, the nanny said: “I usually hug and play with them. But when Michael is around, they freeze in fear. I miss Blanket (the name of the youngest son). He always makes me laugh. Recently, they even tried to perform music to make me happy. Blanket is so cute, he sings Billy Jean and other songs just like his dad. Meanwhile, Prince and Paris often wander around playing. Those are really happy moments.”

The three children also hate having to wear masks when going out. Grace revealed: “They don’t like it at all. I hate it too. So whenever I have the chance, I often pretend to forget to make them comfortable .”

Grace confided that she did not understand why Michael always seemed angry whenever she was close to and affectionate with the three children. “I know, but they need love. I love them. I have been attached to them since they were born. The three of them are like my children. I am also the only mother they know.”

Deepak Chopra, a close friend of MJ, also confirmed: “The children love Grace very much. They call her mom. She is also the only person who tells Michael everything about his life.”

Living with Michael for more than a decade, what surprised Grace the most was that he never sent his children to school, nor hired tutors to teach them. “The three children had no teachers. They didn’t play with other children. No one taught them anything about the world around them,” Grace said.
