From the No. 1 pick to the first playoff spot in eight years, the Indiana Fever is sure living it up with Caitlin Clark. And in the wake of a trail of record-breaking nights, the young guard just broke another one in Indiana’s 110-109 win over the Dallas Wings tonight. In all honesty, CC breaking records have pretty much become a regular occurrence now that it looks effortless! But we know it as well as you that it is anything but. And it seems like Clark has the biggest supporter in someone who understands it the best – LeBron James.
A record that the Lynx legend, Seimone Augustus, held for 18 years, was Clark’s target this time. Suffice it to say that she did it with style, surpassing the 4x WNBA champion’s 744 points with her own 761 – the most single-season points by a rookie! Caitlin, though, isn’t done.
The Fever has one more regular season game. Considering No. 22 averages 19.1 points per game, we can expect her to finish her rookie season with 780 points in a single season – the most by a rookie to date. However, it wasn’t just CC who had a terrific game. Her trusted running mate, Kelsey Mitchell, also erupted for 30 points, and King James couldn’t help but hype the ladies up for their spectacular performance in defeating the Texan franchise.
Taking to his Instagram, LeBron James re-posted an ESPN post, dubbing the pair, “Dynamic Duo!!!!,” followed by 7 fire emojis! No doubt this reminded him of Ray Allen and the good old Heat days (more on this later).
Going 6-of-14 from downtown and a career-high 35 points, Caitlin Clark helped erase a 12-point deficit in tonight’s tough victory. With Mitchell chiming in, the duo combined for 65 points, further solidifying their position as one of the most formidable backcourt duos in the WNBA. In fact, excited fans have already dubbed them the WNBA’s Splash Brothers! Sisters, technically, but you get the idea.
The exact moment Caitlin Clark surpassed Augustus was at 2:53 in the third quarter. And what was her choice of weapon? Why, none other than a deep 3, tying the game at 78. Talking of threes, looking at Mitchell and Clark, LeBron James would surely have felt nostalgic.
WNBA’s biggest stars have achieved a feat that LeBron James and Ray Allen couldn’t, despite winning a Championship together
The ‘Splash Sisters’ certainly have been making waves with their outstanding on-court activity. The pair of them recently made history being the first to each score over 100 treys in a season in league history. And in tonight’s close game, Clark and Mitchell accomplished yet another milestone.
Per Stat Mamba on X, “Caitlin Clark & Kelsey Mitchell are the first duo in WNBA history to both have 30+ PTS & 5+ 3PM.” And this is where the Miami-LeBron and Ray come in. While not a traditional backcourt duo, the two were a lethal pair during their Heat days. An elite three-point shooter, Allen came to the South Beach with championship experience and a veteran leadership. As for Bron, the man was determined to get that ring at any cost.
Hence, combining the 20x All-Star’s remarkable playmaking and the ex-6’5 guard’s clutch shooting made way for the franchise’s second ring, right after clinching one the year before. But perhaps what doesn’t get talked about often is aside from the playmaking, LeBron James was just as spectacular in scoring. Allen’s presence as a shooter spaced the floor for the team, giving the ‘Akron Hammer’ more room to drive to the basket.
Despite it all, LeBron James and Ray Allen could never create a moment like CC and Kelsey. In fact, the 2x champion never had a 30-point game playing alongside the 4x MVP. Moreover, Allen averaged just 10.9 and 9.6 points per game in his two seasons in Miami. This is coming from a guy who averaged a career 18.9 points.
Nevertheless, they had a good run. And if you remember, Miami will always be grateful for Allen’s iconic Game 6 clutch three-pointer. It forced the game into overtime and helped pave the way for their eventual championship. So yes, a good run.
