Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion revealed how the federation is gearing up for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 as the country hopes to build on the success of Carlos Yulo in Paris.

Carrion said they are planning to hire a foreign coach who could guide Yulo and the rest of the gymnastics team they are hoping to send to the next edition of the Summer Games in the States.

“If we can, we can do it. I want him (Yulo) not to go alone, but to have a team with four other gymnasts. So I’m trying to look now for a foreign coach to come,” Carrion shared with Pia Arcangel in a 24 Oras interview on Tuesday.

Having a foreign coach in its program is nothing new to GAP.

In 2013, the gymnastics body tapped the services of Japanese mentor Munehiro Kugimiya, who helped guide Yulo for most of his early career until they went their separate ways last year. Under Kugimiya, Yulo won a number of titles, including two gold medals in the World Championships and multiple titles in the SEA Games.

The GAP then decided to momentarily have a local coach guiding Yulo in his quest for Olympic journey in Paris with Filipino tactician Aldrin Castañeda in the 24-year-old ace’s corner.

That also proved to be a success as Yulo bagged two gold medals in the floor exercise and the vault, leading the way for the country’s best Olympic finish in its 100-year history.

This new move will prepare GAP in its mission to send a team to LA 2028. Carrion is eyeing to include Yulo’s younger brother Eldrew, who is himself a promising gymnast.
