Kathryn sat on the couch, wrapped in a thick blanket, her face pale and her body exhausted. She had been feeling unwell for days, and today, the symptoms were at their worst. A high fever had left her shivering, despite the warm temperature of the room. The once bright sparkle in her eyes was now dull, replaced with an expression of discomfort. It was unlike her to admit weakness, but this illness had taken a toll on her.
Alden noticed the change immediately when he walked into the room. His heart sank at the sight of her, and he quickly knelt beside her, gently brushing her hair from her forehead. “Kath, you don’t look so good,” he said softly, concern evident in his voice.
Kathryn tried to offer a weak smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m fine,” she replied, though her voice was hoarse, betraying her attempt to downplay her condition. “I just need some rest.”
Without waiting for her response, Alden stood up and walked to the kitchen. He returned with a glass of water, some medicine, and a cool towel. He carefully helped her sit up and handed her the medicine. “Here, take this. It’ll help with the fever,” he instructed, his voice soft but unwavering.
Kathryn took the medicine, but her energy was drained, and she leaned back against the couch, closing her eyes. She could feel the coolness of the towel as Alden placed it on her forehead, his touch tender and steady.
“You don’t have to do this,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I want to,” Alden replied, his eyes filled with compassion. “You’re important to me, Kath. I’m not going anywhere.”
Kathryn’s heart warmed at his words. She had always been independent, but in that moment, she realized just how much she needed Alden. His presence, his unwavering care, made the pain a little more bearable.
Alden sat beside her, his hand gently holding hers. “Just rest now. I’m here. You’ll feel better soon, I promise.”
And in the comfort of his presence, with his reassuring words and quiet care, Kathryn felt a sense of peace. Even in sickness, Alden’s love gave her the strength to face another day.
