They collided at the opening corner as Hamilton refused to back down, with Alonso picking up a puncture in the process.

Lance Stroll also suffered damage, while Lando Norris was punted out of the race completely.

Hamilton escaped punishment from the stewards though, leaving Alonso enraged.

He claimed Hamilton “arrived like a bull” and “ruined” the race – was not told off “because he is not Spanish.”

However, Hamilton faced problems of his own during the race after also getting tangled up with Kevin Magnussen.

The Haas ace was punished for his actions by the stewards, and afterwards apologised for his driving.

“But that’s what you do to work as a team so bravo.”
