Mike Tyson once nearly knocked out a charity opponent during an exhibition fight back in 2006.
On Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that Tyson will come out of retirement to take on YouTuber turned-boxer Jake Paul.
The bout is set to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20.
On social media, Paul wrote: “Promotion promotion promotion if I’m being honest it don’t need that.. The biggest fight of the 21st century, in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world…that’s the MVP way.
“Whether you’re tuning in on Netflix or showing out in person, whether you’re team Paul or team Tyson, or whether you’re a lifelong boxing fan or watching your first fight, you’re not going to want to miss this event. I could not be more excited to make this amazing fight available to all Netflix subscribers alongside the hardest hitter of all time, Mike Tyson, on Saturday, July 20th.”
Ahead of the bout, Paul will have to watch out for Tyson’s signature move that nearly knocked out a charity opponent.
Back in 2006, ‘Iron Mike’ held an exhibition bout against a former training partner, Corey Sanders, at the 6,000-seater Chevrolet Centre and fans could tune in via pay-per-view.
He pulled off one of his trademark right hooks in the early rounds of the fight and caught Sanders on the chin.
Sanders, unsurprisingly, lost complete balance and looked certain to hit the canvas, only for Tyson to intervene and help him remain on his feet.
The former undisputed heavyweight champ admitted at the time that he had blown more than $300m and was bankrupt.
“If I don’t get out of this financial quagmire, there’s a possibility I may have to be a punching bag for somebody,” he said.
“The money I make here isn’t going to help any of my bills really from a tremendous standpoint, but I’m going to feel better about myself. I’m not going to be depressed.”
