Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren expressed stern objections over the upcoming professional boxing match between Jake Paul and 58-year-old Mike Tyson. Set to take place on July 20th, the fight will be aired live on Netflix and could impact Tyson’s professional record of 50-6. Despite initial doubts if it would be an official bout or an exhibition, it has been confirmed as a professional contest.
The fight details reveal that both fighters will engage in eight two-minute rounds using 14oz gloves, with no headgear and no ‘no knockdown’ rule enforced. This marks the first professional fight for Tyson in almost two decades, his last being a loss to Kevin McBride.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Warren criticized the decision by Texas regulators to permit this fight. He stated, “Mike Tyson is 58 years of age and he shouldn’t be fighting, it is as simple as that.” Warren highlighted the risk involved, noting that while viewers might see “vintage Mike Tyson” initially, fatigue for Tyson could quickly become apparent. He also mentioned, “For one round you are going to get vintage Mike Tyson throwing bombs – then [after that] he will be a 58-year-old guy in the ring with a younger fella.”
Warren further condemned the Texas Boxing Commission for licensing such a match involving an older athlete at significant health risk. His pointed remarks encapsulate broader concerns about the match’s legitimacy and danger.
