The latest hurricane forecast has just been released as the peak of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season approaches.
This season, the Atlantic basin has seen four named storms, including Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 storm on record in the Atlantic. The latest hurricane forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reduced the number of named storms from 25 to 24, including the four that have emerged so far.
According to NOAA’s latest hurricane outlook for the remainder of the 2024 hurricane season, warm ocean temperatures continue to fuel an extremely severe Atlantic hurricane season.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center updated its forecast on August 8 as Hurricane Debby continued to pound the mid-Atlantic and southeast after making its second landfall in the United States.
By the start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA is forecasting 17 to 25 named storms to form, with 8 to 13 becoming hurricanes with winds of at least 75 mph (120 km/h) and 4 to 7 becoming major hurricanes with winds of at least 110 mph (178 km/h).
The latest forecast reduces the number of named storms to 17 to 24, including the four storms that have formed so far this season. The rest of the forecast remains unchanged.
A typical Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, with seven becoming hurricanes. Based on ocean and atmospheric conditions, NOAA forecasters predict a 90 percent chance of an above-average 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
Already this season, the Atlantic basin has seen four named storms, including Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 storm on record in the Atlantic. Beryl hit the Caribbean islands, killing at least 20 people before making a second landfall in Texas. Beryl’s remnants caused deadly flooding in Vermont.
On August 5, Hurricane Debby made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 storm before weakening to a tropical depression. The storm stalled in the Carolinas, causing flooding and tornadoes. After reentering the Atlantic, Debby made a second landfall on August 8 in South Carolina and its impacts continued to be felt along the Interstate 95 corridor.
