There’s a famous saying that goes “Success is a journey, not a destination.” It’s good advice for young dreamers not to fixate on the goal, but what about women who have actually tasted success now that they’re older–is the journey over?
For Maricar Reyes-Poon, she believes that she’s just getting started as a woman in her 40s—and has gone from showbiz to business, to writing her own book.
Maricar’s Transformation Journey
When you start your 20s as a fresh-faced actress, it can feel like the world is at your feet but being a celebrity can cause you to lose touch with your inner self. Maricar shares that “I’m not too sure if I’ve really transformed, but definitely I’m slowly learning how to be the person I was created to be.”
After getting married in 2013, Maricar ventured into the world of entrepreneurship with a cake business, cultivated a large and engaged following with her relationship advice Facebook page “Relationship Matters PH” with her husband, and achieved literary success as a published author.
She opens up about being a late bloomer. “Medyo late bloomer nga ako eh kasi parang ngayon ko lang medyo nahahanap kung sino ba talaga ako,” she shares. “It doesn’t make me a bad person. Ang self-discovery ay hindi lang pala para sa 20s hehe.” She adds: “Okay lang pala not to have it all figured out by 40.”
Pursuing Dreams in Her 40s
Maricar’s success changed from standing in the limelight to something more personal, but she also changed the way she worked toward her goals, she opened up, “I feel like mas-targeted yung galaw ko ngayon. I’m learning how to do more of what I am naturally good at, and doing less of what I am weak at. Mas kaya ko nang humingi ng tulong, hehe. Dati kasi feeling ko I have to be good at everything… even though there is a lot to do, feeling ko parang mas chill ang buhay ko.”
This shift included asking for help from a higher power too, as Maricar discovered that, “Slowly I am shifting from getting my value from myself to getting my value from The One who created me. Sa Kanya naman kasi ang totoong value ko.”
Maricar adds, “There is a big and beautiful reason why you were created, and I hope every woman will do their best to find out what that is and live according to her purpose.”
The Importance of Health and Skincare
Maricar may be entering her mid-40s, but she definitely does not look it, because her journey has always included overall health and beauty. “The older I get, mas nagfo-focus ako sa overall health more than yung mga pahid-pahid skincare… If you are in good health, it usually comes out in our skin, lalo na as we age.”
When asked what advice would she give to women entering their 40s who might feel it’s too late to chase their dreams, Maricar shares: Dreams are good, pero mas powerful pala kapag may purpose. I can dream of having a mansion in Forbes Park and 100 million pesos, pero pag na-achieve ko na yun, what’s next? There’s always something next, kasi human beings are never satisfied. It’s never too late to find your purpose. Your purpose can be as large-scale as Mother Theresa moving to India to work with the poor, or simple but powerful like a mom raising her kids to be strong, kind, independent, and valuable to society.” She ends, ”Find your purpose. From there, all the right dreams will follow.”
