According to CNN’s latest hurricane report, a hurricane warning was issued for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Vieques and Culebra on August 13, as forecasters fear Ernesto could rapidly intensify into a dangerous hurricane.

“Hurricane forecast models indicate that Ernesto could approach or become a hurricane within the next 24 hours,” the National Hurricane Center warned at noon on August 13. The center said there are several indicators that indicate a very high likelihood of the storm rapidly intensifying, meaning it could increase its speed by at least 56 km/h within 24 hours.

The storm’s sustained winds increased from 32 km/h to 100 km/h between 9 a.m. on August 13 and early afternoon on August 13.

The latest hurricane forecast predicts that Hurricane Ernesto could become a hurricane as it moves just north of Puerto Rico on the morning of August 14, local time. Previously, Hurricane Ernesto was forecast to reach hurricane strength late on August 14.

The center of Hurricane Ernesto moved across the Leeward Islands in the northeastern Caribbean by midday on August 13 after moving near or over Guadeloupe on the morning of August 13.

The winds and rains from Ernesto are expected to spread to many parts of the region on August 14.

Ernesto is expected to gradually turn north on August 14 and move out of the Caribbean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. As it crosses open ocean, Ernesto will strengthen further.

The intensity of Ernesto will depend largely on ocean temperatures. There is a chance that Ernesto will become a major hurricane, a Category 3 hurricane or higher, by the end of this week, according to CNN’s latest hurricane report.

However, Ernesto’s path could change depending on a number of factors, including when the storm moves north. A later track could mean the storm impacts areas as far west as Hispaniola or the southern Bahamas.

Ernesto is expected to become a major hurricane by the end of the week as it approaches Bermuda. However, forecasters caution that it is too early to know exactly how close Ernesto will get to Bermuda and what level of rain and wind it will bring. But the storm will have widespread impacts in the second half of the week regardless of which direction it moves in the Atlantic. The Atlantic hurricane season’s fifth storm is expected to churn up ocean waters hundreds of miles away.
